Two from CEBC contribute to new report from the National Academies

The chemical economy is critically important to the U.S. economy and U.S. leadership in the complex global ecosystem, states a newly released National Academies Report, “The Importance of Chemical Research to the U.S. Economy.”

The 200-page report is the result of a consensus study group chaired by George Washington University President Mark S. Wrighton. Among the experts selected for this NASEM committee are CEBC Director Bala Subramaniam, and CEBC Industry Advisory Board Member Dr. Cathy Tway of Johnson Matthey. Dr. Tway served as the committee’s vice chair. She and Prof. Subramaniam both participated in a July 21, 2022 webinar hosted by NAS. During the webinar, a five-person panel, selected from the full committee and led by Chair Dr. Wrighton, announced the report’s publication and answered questions from the public. The committee continues to hold briefings with funding agencies and other organizations about this report.

“Continued investments in fundamental chemical research are critical,” said Prof. Subramaniam, “as the changing energy and feedstock landscape toward sustainable sources require new technologies that protect the environment and human health.” He credits the comprehensive report for its scope, noting that “it is filled with valuable information for all those involved in chemical research, education and workforce development.”
